The “Michael” Biopic: Can We Separate the Art from the Artist?

The new “Michael” biopic might be the toughest movie anyone’s ever tried to make. It covers everything, from Jackson’s early Jackson 5 days to the peak of his fame, and has to deal with all the controversy that still follows him. Antoine Fuqua’s directing, and the trailer actually looks great, but no matter how good it is, it faces the big question: can we really separate the art from the artist?

It reminds me a lot of Bohemian Rhapsody. That movie turned out to be a huge hit, but it definitely softened some of Freddie Mercury’s story of massive drug use and deviant sex, because Queen’s team was involved. This feels like the same situation, only with way more at stake. Between the legal issues, delays, and early hype, Michael is already one of the most talked-about movies in the world.

Whether it ends up being amazing or a total mess, it’s going to spark a massive conversation, and probably a few arguments too.
